BOOK REVIEW: The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy

I just finished reading The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy by John Mearsheimer, a professor at the University of Chicago, and Stephen Walt, a professor at Harvard University. At nearly 500 pages, it’s a substantial read, but I powered through it in about 24 hours because I was determined to understand one of the most pressing political questions: Why is American support for Israel so unwavering and unconditional?

This book provided the clearest and most well-researched explanation I have come across. Mearsheimer and Walt meticulously analyze how the Israel lobby influences U.S. foreign policy, often in ways that do not align with American national interests. They argue that this powerful network—consisting of political action committees (PACs), think tanks, and influential policymakers—has shaped American policy in the Middle East, sometimes at great cost.

What makes this book particularly compelling is its reliance on rigorous research, historical documentation, and factual examples, rather than ideology or bias. The authors lay out their case with hundreds of references and citations, making it difficult to dismiss their arguments as mere speculation or conspiracy. The book challenges widely accepted narratives and encourages readers to critically examine the true motivations behind U.S. policies in the region.

It was worth my time, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If you’re interested in geopolitics, U.S. foreign policy, or Middle East affairs, this book is an essential read.
